An Prediction Market Trader Earned $436K from Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.
Market Movement in Predictions
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been seized.
One account, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Public Statement
Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
Yet the odds had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also earned significant sums from similar wagers.
Legal Questions Intensifies
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.
Market Background
Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from elections to politics.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
