California's Governor States He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he plans to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom commented when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president after the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."

Newsom's current term as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he noted that any decision is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

He has emerged as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, employing his digital presence and championing a ballot measure that would expand the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from critics.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a weekend interview on Fox News. The secretary disclosed plans to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested suspending the state's ability to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," Duffy said, following a this week's fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

The governor's team noted that the national authorities had renewed the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a CDL under federal law.

The transportation secretary had before stated he was blocking additional funds from California for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand national statutes," the governor's team said in a last month's statement addressing the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's truck drivers had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A recent study showed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom must consider running for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.

"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, amazing," he said. "No one can say? I am eager to see who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
