EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
