"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There's just one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're not alone. Multiple celebrated supporters have also begged for the position.

The evidence suggests something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos repeatedly feature them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to form a group."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Nod

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album was born from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes track endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent toughness demanded a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international audience.

However Haim will consistently be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
