Jujutsu Kaisen: The Execution Film Strives to Resolve the Anime's Biggest Issue

JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution is not precisely an original movie. Rather, the latest film from the Jujutsu Kaisen fantasy saga acts as a recap of the anime's second season merged with the opening installments of its upcoming season, which launches the Culling Games storyline from the original manga. This makes Execution, which has been given a new trailer, the first way to watch the start of the upcoming season ahead of its 2026 January debut. The feature launches in cinemas in Japan starting November 7, and in North American regions on December 5.

The Culling Games Storyline

In the Culling Games plot, Elite sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu is introduced in the show and is assigned by jujutsu officials to eliminate his fellow student Yuji Itadori. Their long-awaited clash unfolds for the first time on the big screen, and if the artists at the studio have a treat as the two-part Thunderclap episodes in store for fans this holiday season, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may end up being the surprise that we've been waiting for.

The "Thunderclap" Controversy

"Thunderclap episodes" from the second season is often hailed as one of the greatest sequences in the history of anime, despite all the controversy in the previous year when the series first premiered. It was reported that the creators were enduring tight schedules to the extent, and the broadcast edition that premiered at the time was incomplete and allegedly not what the team originally planned.

The Legendary Fight

The sequence involves a heavily anticipated fight between two strong jujutsu users, the King of Curses and the Eight-Handled Sword. It features experimental animation, excellent direction, and thrilling combat. A later Blu-ray release provided an opportunity to add additional scenes to expand the fight. So it appeared likely Execution could improve the battle even more. However, looking at the new trailer, it's unclear if that confrontation has been given extra attention. It'd be a shame if it didn't, because a moment so epic has to be seen on the largest display with the finest quality available.

The Second Season's Triumph

The second season of JuJutsu Kaisen propelled the series to become the top anime of the year, and when episodes 40 and 41 were premiered one after another, it was the focus of attention for an extended period in the series' fanbase. Viewers knew about the production challenges, which made them value what they witnessed even more. People eagerly awaited to see if the Blu-ray, made available on March 18, would feature extra content to the battle or to see if it was improved in any way, and were elated to see exactly that, alongside reshades, enhanced animation, and revised visual style.

The Film's Potential

But the Blu-ray can only touch up what has already been presented in the television version, whereas the film has the potential to properly present the moment with further changes and freshly created footage.

A Crowning Achievement

Currently, these two episodes represent the pinnacle of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be given special attention by Mappa, particularly given the controversy they encountered at the time. It's drawn the focus of anime fans all over the world, and the Culling Games is one of the most anticipated anime arcs of the following year. If Mappa wants to begin the year strongly, run back the series' best moment once again in theaters with the best interpretation we've seen yet.
