The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
