Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
