Forecasters are reporting a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated over large parts of the UK. Revelers have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed Despite Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," said the weather service.

Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with no rain and open skies. Readings are expected to be chilly, making additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are likely on public transport.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Advisories Issued

In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this meant the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
