Shifting from Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.

Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.

“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release

But, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the offensive.

“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Response

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.

Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted

Nonetheless, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a law mandating the files' release.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that contained little new data.
