Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in English Ashes Team

The English team has opted for a twelve-player selection just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man squad, indicating there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.

The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if the spinner makes the final team.

Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers

The England coach had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several past matches.

In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable choice.

Spin Options Considered

There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.

However the coach has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.

In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”

“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
