The Popular Hack
Set a couple of ice cubes on the potting mix. The idea posits when the ice dissolves, it slowly dispenses water, giving the roots ample time to absorb it and avoiding soggy conditions.
Examining the Practice
This technique functions best for compact containers and plants that dislike overwatering, for instance orchids. However, a great many of tropical-loving foliage plants dislike chilly conditions. A plant's roots evolved for temperate conditions, and freezing water can stress or harm them. Room climate plays a big factor in this method's success: in a heated space, the ice will dissolve very quickly, giving little value, whereas in a chilly room it may linger excessively, lowering the temperature of the roots and slowing water uptake. It is crucial to confirm ice cubes are made from fresh, potable water and do not press them right onto plant stems or delicate roots.
Putting it to Trial
This was tested on a Phalaenopsis. Two cubes per week maintained the roots consistently damp without sogginess. In contrast, employing the same trick on a Calathea caused discoloration at the tips of the leaves, a definite symptom of chill damage.
Our Assessment
The cube technique can be effective for Phalaenopsis, yet it is not appropriate for the majority of tropical houseplants and hinges heavily on room climate. Therefore, this hack won't be recommended; tepid water poured slowly is still the most dependable technique to properly hydrate your green companions.
