Social Media Content Creators Driving Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug
An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to recent findings.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
This medication is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.
Medical Experts Voice Worries
However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Some professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Enforcement
Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.
Platform Reaction and Material Elimination
According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at residence.
After moments of entering one community, a vendor posted contact information, where most transactions occur. The seller sent an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Item Information and Costs
Within these communities, posts show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should last, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Security Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly moderated harmful content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her staff has previously seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
