Steve Bannon, Tucker Carlson and... Liz Truss? A Look Inside the Former PM's Foray for the Maga Movement

The former UK leader, began the premiere of her YouTube show with a vow to reveal "malicious actors" attempting to bring down Britain, the US and Europe. She explained she would uncover how an "global web of progressives work to weaken the democratic process and the electorate's mandate."

"We will examine the Maga phenomenon and understand how this can be replicated in Britain," she said. "Our guests will include the key figures of the Make America Great Again campaign."

Before the show's launch, there was a strong advocate. "This represents the dawn of a type of political shift," said John Solomon. His media outlet Just the News will publish the former prime minister's new broadcasts.

Forging Alliances in the Maga Media Ecosystem

Compatriot supporters, featuring a counselor supportive of Reform, have also helped her establish the her new show. Its staging is professional, though simple. The show has attracted 10,000 subscribers in her initial seven days and her first episode achieved tens of thousands of views in that timeframe.

This marks a humble beginning, but in aligning with Solomon, she is being thrust into a mature conservative ecosystem generating and disseminating Make America Great Again themes. Key fixations involve accusations of information control by the traditional news outlets and a aim to dismantle a shadowy government apparatus – which Truss blames for the abrupt termination of her calamitous premiership.

"The platform is not widely recognized past the Maga-verse, but it does have influence there, mostly due to Solomon, who offers opinions on pro-Trump shows like Bannon's 'War Room' podcast and has even spoken with the former president," commented Professor Alex Hinton, who has closely studied the Trumpist political wave.

A Contentious Ally

Truss's attempt to transplant Maga media to the UK has pushed her closer to contentious individuals such as John Solomon.

He established the platform after criticism after he was accused of circulating false stories about Joe Biden's anticorruption effort in Ukraine, as well as controversial stories about ex-ambassador to the region.

Solomon's reporting were echoed throughout the pro-Trump outlets, with Solomon appearing as a common interviewee on the prominent Fox News program. Donald Trump endorsed Solomon's reporting.

He wrote the allegations regarding Ukraine in a series of columns for the political newspaper The Hill, after having been re-designated as an opinion writer following internal criticism over his articles. His claims were central in the then-president's request for the Ukrainians to investigate the Biden family in 2019. This pressure led to articles of impeachment targeting Donald Trump. Senators later found not guilty the president.

Weeks after he exited the publication in late 2019, the news organization revealed it was conducting a review of his work relating to Ukraine. It determined Solomon had cited unreliable sources and said he "omitted important details about primary contacts in Ukraine, specifically the detail that they had been charged or were under investigation."

Entering the Ecosystem

Solomon's own broadcast spots are a example of the right-wing media network the former prime minister is joining. He talked about his endorsement of the program on a program he presents on Real America's Voice, a political media platform that is home to the pro-Trump commentator ex-Trump strategist Bannon and on which former Fox host Tucker Carlson also appears. Truss has already interviewed the political operative on an early episode.

Through her association with Solomon and Just the News, the former leader has become a minor player in a much wider network of pro-Trump platforms that routinely share and promote one another's material.

His personal podcast and Real America's Voice show have repeatedly hosted individuals such as Mike Benz, a political voice whose criticism of the foreign aid agency was used by Elon Musk as reasoning behind closing the international development organization.

A Cross-Border Foray

Although the former PM's unnatural presentation and career difficulties have invited ridicule within the UK, some US observers are not discounting her bid to rebrand as a local version of the Make America Great Again press.

"One must regard folks like that as significant, despite the fact that you may not want to take them literally," said a Democratic strategist, who served in the Obama White House.

"Observers witnessed how in the recent campaign Donald Trump utilized that ecosystem to disseminate his views. Certainly that ecosystem transmits and affects discourse abroad. It appears fairly obvious to me that the circumstances in the United Kingdom are akin to what allowed this alternative media ecosystem to flourish here."

Alan Finlayson, said the online conservative ecosystem was already making its presence felt in the UK.

"Digital media knows no borders," he said. "There exists a sort of atmosphere within which content circulates – on occasion taking an extreme form and occasionally in softer tones – but which is networked."

Hinton said the rise of the digital conservative movement in the UK lately meant the "chance to have a larger effect is considerable."

Cross-Atlantic Aspirations
