The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
