The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the identical stature as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
