As Michel Illouz slowly made his way through the crowds beneath the tall evergreens and tropical trees at the burial ground in Ra'anana, a community located approximately 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv, he expressed gratitude to countless visitors as possible.

He had extended an welcoming message to the nation's citizens to stand with his relatives in honoring the memory of his 26-year-old son, Guy, whose body had been returned from Gaza on Monday.

Substantial Gathering

Numerous people answered the invitation. They occupied the avenues, accompanied the funeral vehicle carrying his remains, and gathered at the cemetery in such significant numbers that the primary scheme to hold the ceremony indoors had to be discarded.

This marked the opening memorial service since the last score of prisoners came back from Gaza, accompanied by multiple remains. A further more than twenty of the dead prisoners continue to be lost, but at the very minimum this loved ones now had a designated location to grieve and commemorate their son, per friends.

Guy Illouz, a musician and audio engineer, had been struck from behind at the Nova music festival during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Before the tragedy unfolded, he had reached out to his father from a concealed location to express his love; to say goodbye. He was taken hostage, and according to those held with him, he subsequently passed away from his wounds due to medical neglect.

Family Perspective

A trusted companion of the Illouz household, Michelle, in her fifth decade, mentioned that it had been vitally significant to them that people attended today. The Illouz relatives, comprising Guy's siblings and male sibling, had practiced the mourning period, the week-long period of grieving, after being informed of his death in December of the prior year. But now that Guy was at long last back with them, they desired "people around them again."

"My spirit is uplifted that you attended," expressed Michel. "We don't take it for granted."

Father's Tribute

He addressed his son. "Beloved Guy," he said, using a term of endearment, "it's difficult for me to conceive the future without you. They snatched you from me – they ended your life – they kidnapped me and took my sense of self and murdered my soul and feelings."

"There's a void within me since that meaningless attack by those malicious militants when they caught you and instructed you to turn around, and then just discharged two gratuitous rounds into your dorsal area."

Final Goodbye

"And here I am this morning, driving to Abu Kabir forensic institute to verify your remains and bid farewell. They removed the white sheet, and the first thing I observed was that characteristic grin, that optimism, that serenity and grace that so exemplified you."

"I touched you, tried to smell you, tenderly touched all areas in your body. I observed you, I was in private with you, and yes, I felt with total assurance that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've rejoined our family. You've rejoined your relatives' care, to all your companions, and to the millions of citizens whose feelings your story impacted."

Familial Courage

In the beginning phase of the service, Illouz had concentrated completely on comforting his junior family members. He stroked the hair of his female children, embraced his boy, kissed his neck and maintained composure for them. But then his feelings emerged.

Cherished Memories

"I will yearn for so much exploring alongside you through this land, experiencing your company, listening to your compositions, relaxing in mountainous areas and lighting the burner to prepare the beverage the way only you mastered – 'Father, do you see the coffee froth? You have to heat it slowly, let the bubbles form, then heat it once more. Stir the coffee with circular motions' – and then your smile while sipping the coffee and your delight in every particular taste."

"Prior to my departure Abu Kabir today, I honored my word. I looked at you, inhaled your essence one last time, and yes, I kissed you on the forehead. I was managed to observe your handsomeness even in the state in which you were repatriated."
