We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
