The British government has pulled a contentious $1.15 bn loan backing a massive LNG project in the African nation of Mozambique, after increasing allegations that the venture contributes to the climate crisis and insurgent unrest in the area.

Government Announcement and Rationale

Business Secretary the Business Secretary stated that the UK would terminate its financial support for the gas venture, coming five years after the deal provoked fierce criticism from advocacy groups over its effects on human rights, safety, and the environment.

“Whilst these decisions are never straightforward, the administration considers that UK financing of this project will not serve the interests of our nation,” said the minister.

The move was revealed as the project's developer, France-based energy major TotalEnergies, is set to resume the problem-plagued initiative, which has been on hold since a devastating militant attack on a nearby community in 2021 resulted in hundreds of fatalities.

History and Growing Risks

The financing deal was initially approved in 2020. The government stated they had evaluated the dangers linked to the project and determined they had escalated substantially since that point.

Originally, the UK's finance body had claimed the scheme would create over 2,000 of UK jobs and could be “pivotal for Mozambique's financial and societal development.”

However, green organisations have consistently contended that the African country should be aided to channel resources more aggressively in clean power to establish a viable green economy.

Criticism and Calls for Wider Withdrawal

The project became a lightning rod for violence in the area and was also alleged of infringing upon the human rights of local communities who were moved when construction activities commenced.

“It has been obvious for years that this scheme is a failure for local communities and for the environment,” said one advocate from a ethical investment organisation. He called on leading international banks funding the venture to end their backing, stating they “can no longer ignore the concerns.”

Another leading environmental advocate added: “This Mozambique gas project is a massive climate liability, connected to significant violations. It should never have been given UK taxpayer-funded backing in the first place.”

They further advocated that the UK should instead assist nations like Mozambique by helping them to become resilient to the impacts of the climate crisis and invest in their abundant renewable sources.
