What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
